Mark Chappell delivers ABOTA “Masters in Trial” closing argument

Mark Chappell, founding member of Chappell, Chappell and Newman, a personal injury firm in Columbia, delivered the closing argument for the Plaintiff’s case in the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates “Masters in Trial” competition last Friday. The mock-trial, held at the University of South Carolina law school, featured many of the most distinguished courtroom advocates in South Carolina.

ABOTA is an invitation-only organization of attorneys committed to the strength and preservation of the civil justice system. Attorneys receiving an invitation to join ABOTA are admitted only after passing through a rigorous screening process to ensure that they are of high personal character and honorable reputation in their communities.

Mark Chappell elected to AAJ Board of Governors

Personal injury attorney Mark Chappell of Chappell, Chappell and Newman has been elected to the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Board of Governors. Chappell will serve a two-year term representing the South Carolina Association for Justice (SCAJ). Members of the AAJ Board represent their home state to the national association.

AAJ was founded in 1946 as the National Association of Claimants’ Compensation Attorneys. In 2006, members voted to rename the group the American Association for Justice. AAJ is the world’s largest trial bar and aims to promote a fair and effective justice system. They support the work of attorneys in their effort to ensure that everyone has the legal right to obtain justice in the courtroom. AAJ consists of members worldwide who are involved in diverse areas of trial advocacy.

Mark Chappell and Graham Newman honored as Super Lawyers

The legal team at Chappell, Chappell and Newman is proud to announce that partner Mark Chappell has been named as a Super Lawyer for 2018. Mr. Chappell has received this recognition annually since 2009, making this his tenth consecutive year. Graham Newman has also been honored. Mr. Newman has been named a Rising Star by the Super Lawyers organization each year since 2013, making this his sixth consecutive year.

Mr. Chappell recognizes that each client and case are unique, and he handles his work with great insight and responsiveness backed by more than 30 years of experience. Since founding the firm, Mark has handled thousands of cases in personal injury, truck and auto accidents, catastrophic injury, and product liability. He represents only those who have been injured by the negligence, incompetence, or wrongdoing of others. He never represents insurance carriers, employers, or companies.

The dedication, vast experience, insight, and the personal attention Graham Newman provides for his clients are the reasons he has once again been honored as a Super Lawyers Rising Star. Mr. Newman’s work is focused on commercial class actions, contractual litigation, insurance bad faith, and products liability in both state and federal court. His trial court victories have included a $14.5 million insurance bad faith verdict, an $8 million class action judgment, and a $4.75 million products liability verdict.

The highly regarded Super Lawyer honor is awarded after an extensive, patented, multi-phase selection process. It combines independent research with peer nominations and evaluations. Every candidate is individually evaluated on twelve indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Selections are made annually, on a state-by-state basis. Honorees represent the top five percent of attorneys in each state. The selection process for Rising Stars is the same, with the exception being that a candidate must be either 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less.

Mark Chappell receives prestigious “Compleat Lawyer” award

In a reception last night at the University of South Carolina, Chappell, Chappell and Newman co-founder Mark Chappell received the prestigious “Compleat Lawyer” award from the USC School of Law Alumni Council.

The Compleat Lawyer award was established in 1992 and is bestowed upon attorneys who have made significant contributions to the legal profession and exemplify the highest standards of professional competence, ethics and integrity. The award selection committee consists of the Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, the Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the President of the South Carolina Bar, the Chairman of the Law School Alumni Council, and the Dean of the USC School of Law.

Mark Chappell was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1985 and has handled thousands of cases including at least one in every county of the State. His civic achievements include playing instrumental roles in the drafting and enacting of the “Jessica Horton Act“, which requires outside investigation of deaths on college campuses, and “Chandler’s Law“, which requires the observation of strict safety protocols for minors operating All-Terrain vehicles.
